The theme and its story: Ramanand Ray

We now come to the scene on the left. It shows Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in front of Radha and Krishna with Ramananda Ray sitting with folded hands.

Ramananda Ray was one of the most intimate associates of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu would discuss with him the most confidential topics of Krishna consciousness, and in his company Shri Chaitanya would relish the deepest feelings of devotional service.

As a devotee, Ramananda Ray had a profound understanding of the particular flavour or rasa of the intimate relationship between Radha and Krishna. He said that one has to adopt the mood of the gopi’s to understand the beauty and the transcendental state of the relationship between Radha and Krishna. He and Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu would often engage in lengthy discussions on Krishna bhakti. One such meeting in Vidyanagara lasted for ten days. Their talks are famously known as Ramananda Samvagh.

After finishing his talk, Ramananda Ray saw something never seen before. Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu revealed Himself as both Shrimati Radharani and Shri Krishna. Seeing this, Ramananda went in a transcendental bliss.

Ramananda Ray was the first person to reveal the deep varieties of rasa which Shri Chaitanya privately savored within Himself. He saw Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu as the combined form of Rasaraja-Mahabhava. Rasaraja Shri Krishna and Mahabhava svarupini-Shri Radha now appeared in one beautiful dazzling form, which we see here.
